Apologetics Websites

4Truth.net. North American Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention.

A Southern Baptist Convention North American Missions Boards sponsored site that has many good articles on a wide range of topics. The writers: Mike Licona, Tal Davis and Bill Gordon have more than 50 years combined experience working in the Interfaith Evangelism and Apologetics. The site has many audio files and interviews in addition to a range of written content. In addition to standard Christian doctrinal content there are in depth sections addressing atheism, cults, and world religions (including the occult). This is a serious resource by good scholars.

Always Be Ready   Always Be Ready (ABR) is a Christian apologetics ministry dedicated to equipping Christians with well-researched information on issues that seek to undermine or challenge the truth of Christianity as revealed in the Bible.  The director of ABR is Charlie Campbell. Charlie is an ordained pastor (with Calvary Chapel), author, and popular guest teacher at churches around the United States on issues related to the defense of the Christian fait

Ankerberg Theological Research Institute, John Ankerberg Show – Christian Apologetics, Jesus, Bible & Christ.

This is a strong orthodox evangelical resource with good scholarship. I really like Dr Ankerberg’s style and I agree with him on every issue I have seen him discuss, from creation to eschatology. This is a good source for college level and/or popular level research. There are many articles and resources here from a variety of noteworthy competent writers and scholars. This is an extension of the television program so there are also videos available. Navigation could be better; you need to click the link that says “2500 articles” and then you are presented with a list of indexes. Fortunately, there is Google search box for the site as well. Because it is a successful television ministry some of the top names have contributed to the content. This site is highly recommended.

Answeringinfidels.com.

This site appears to be created in response to a popular atheist site http://infidels.org/ , which is an entry itself of the reconnaissance variety. It has good responses to arguments by skeptics and Muslims, some by well known scholars. Some are only indexed by the name of the skeptic they address, so you may have to dig a bit. Which I suppose is fine if you are only addressing a skeptic but it would be nice for research purposes to know who the authors were and the subjects addressed from a more accessible comprehensive index. In fairness, there is a topical menu with standard fare, Bible, Jesus, Science with a few more articles. The articles appear to be well documented but I would take some care in using them for college level work.

Apologetics Index: Christian Apologetics and Cult Information

This is a great resource suitable for all kinds of research. It has a powerful and easy to use A-Z index with an exhaustive amount of resources readily indexed.  Because it has been around for a good while, Apologetics Index includes over 40,870 pages internal and linked from various other websites. Their focus is on cults, sects, other religious movements, and doctrine. The publishers, Anton and Janet Hein-Hudson, operate from an evangelical, Christian point of view and evaluate cults both theologically and sociologically in light of orthodoxy. Navigation is pretty intuitive and they even have a page on how to best use the site. This great place to start researching a topic and is highly recommended.

Apologetics.com.

This appears to be mainly a podcast/radio program. I found some articles on a range of apologetic subjects. This is a popular level resource that is doing real world ministry by engaging the culture. There appears to be a membership area that offers training in apologetics but I’m not paying to check it out. From what I saw, I don’t think this meets the scholarship standard for college level research, however I listened to bit of a podcast and it sounds worthwhile.

Apologetics 315

Interesting site with a lot of resources. The most popular resource is the Ultimate Apologetics MP3 Audio Page, where you can find hundreds of hours of apologetics audio for downloading.  Check out the post 100 Christian Apologists and the Christian Apologetics Blog Directory. Looking for good apologetics books to read? Check out the Recommended Apologetics Book Directory. Associates for Biblical Research.

This is a great site with a lot of material on Biblical Archeology. It is associated with the journal Bible and Spade which is a scholarly archeology journal that takes the Bible seriously. I used this site quite a bit for my research into the evidence for the Exodus for BIBL471 here at Liberty. There are many articles on a variety of subjects including general apologetics. The principle archeologist is Dr Bryant Wood, a legitimate credentialed archeologist, doing active excavation work in the Ancient Near East. The perspective is biblical, mainly in that the scholarship does not follow the typical documentary hypothesis route favored by many archeologists. It is more in the tradition of the early twentieth century when scholars still actually believed the Bible. For that reason this is a rare and useful resource.

Bethinking.org – Engage with Culture. UCCF: The Christian Unions, 2010.

Bethinking.org is sponsored by the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship: The Christian Unions. I believe this is a British site. The material is sourced from many different individuals and organizations; including a series of articles by Liberty’s own Dr Gary Habermas. There is popular level stuff and material suitable for college level research with a nice search feature. There are audio downloads, events listings, and news.  In particular there is a great introduction to studying apologetics with a reading list.

CARMChristian Apologetics and Research Ministry

This is very useful site suitable for scholarly research and basic apologetics. They have resources on theology as well as  analyzing religions such as Islam, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, Roman Catholicism, Universalism, Wicca, etc., and comparing them to the Bible.  They also analyze secular philosophies such as abortion, atheism, evolution, and relativism. Overall an excellent website, highly recommended!

Reasonable Faith: William Lane Craig

I can’t really say enough good things about Dr Craig, him being one of the authors of our textbook I doubt I need to. He is one of the premier scholars and philosophers of the evangelical world. His website is invaluable, but it’s not an exhaustive resource like Apologetics index. It is important to register to gain access to the resources; this is free so it’s not a problem. There are transcripts of Dr Craig’s debates lots of articles scholarly and popular. The work is of course suitable for the highest level research. I participate on the message board and listen to his podcast “Defenders” which is a recording of a Sunday school class he teaches in Atlanta. I’ve been a member of the site for a few years and I support Dr Craig’s ministry.

C.S. Lewis Institute.

The CS Lewis Institute works partnership with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries and the Frances Schaeffer Institute this program provides a clear understanding of the conversion process, the message of the gospel, and how to share it in a postmodern culture. The web site is not only the front to the training program offered; it hosts quite a few resources. There are audio and video files and back issues of the journal. The journal is scholarly and certainly meets the level of a collegiate source. The easiest way to find articles for research is to click the site map link for an alphabetic list. There are articles on range of apologetic topics and quite a bit of material on C.S. Lewis’ life and work.

Stand to Reason: Greg Koukl’s ministry & radio show/podcast

Stand to Reason is the ministry, radio program and website of apologist Greg Koukl. Mr. Koukl’s work is impressive. I listen via podcast on a regular basis.  There are resources in video, audio and article format, most free to download. There is a journal called “Solid Ground” which available online, as an email and in print format. From what I have seen this is scholarly work but accessible to all. He also offers apologetic training materials which are available for a modest fee and many free online resources.

Christian Research Institute

The Christian Research Institute exists to provide Christians with researched information and well-reasoned answers. Now directed by Hank Hanegraff, this was formally the ministry of Dr Walter Martin who was famous for his work with cults. Hank also hosts the Bible answer man radio program which is available for download. There is a treasure trove of material available but it is a little tricky to find. If you look at the bottom of the main page there is a link called “research” this is where the main body of text material can be found. I think it is geared to be accessible to the layman but it is serious research work. There is really is a lot here, each menu reveals a deeper level with many articles. This is a quality resource as well.

Tekton Apologetics Ministries. James Patrick Holding. Tektonitron Apologetics Encyclopedia. Answering Bible Difficulties and Bible Contradictions.

This another favorite site of mine. J.P. Holding is good writer and I appreciate his dry sense of humor. The site is more extensive than it first appears; there are lots of links as well. The major feature that any apologist will find useful is he has a book by book verse by verse listing of Bible articles addressing almost every objection you will ever get thrown at you by a skeptic. He has also done extensive work on the so called pagan copy cat theory of the Gospel accounts. There is a lot of material and it is all scholarly and Christ centered. I disagree with his eschatology, as J.P. is a partial preterist, but he is evangelical and a Baptist.

L’Abri Ideas Library A Christian Thinktank.    (Main L’Abri site )

This group is the think tank commune first started by the late great Dr Francis Schaeffer. You can actually make arrangements to live and work at one of the branches while studying and immersing yourself in deep Christian thought. The website has links to branches in the USA and Europe. The newsletters are interesting and a resource in and of themselves, there are many articles and philosophical papers available as well, you have to do some digging at the various locations but there is a lot of interesting work. It’s all of high caliber and I wouldn’t hesitate to cite it in college level work. They have recently opened an audio library with sound recordings of Dr Schaeffer’s lectures and discussions at the L’Abri. This is a rare gem of untapped resources. I wish I had more time to spend here.

Ravi Zacharias International Ministries.

Who doesn’t like Ravi Zacharias? He’s a charming speaker and truly a blessing from God. His website offers recordings of his radio programs and lots of other training resources that he has developed over the years. At first glance this site appears to be a promotion for his programs and ministry, however if you dig a bit with the search engine you can find quite a few articles on a wide range of topics.  To find material suitable for serious research you can follow the links to the “Essay” sub heading and then search only essays. In addition there is a journal directed specifically to India, “Engage” and another “A Slice of Infinity” which is geared to the post modern western culture.  Both have archives and there are a lot of issues, searching the archive is a bit problematic, in that the titles are fairly vague. However it would be easy to find a wealth of material on a topic like pluralism. This is a good resource, but it will require some digging.

Reasons To Believe: Science Faith Think-tank: Hugh Ross, Fazale Rana, Kenneth Samples, David Rogstad, Jeff Zweerink.

Contrary to Richard Dawkins’ canard that Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist, I think Dr Hugh Ross makes it possible to be an evangelically fulfilled scientist. He is a PhD Astrophysicist and an evangelical pastor that does chapel at Cal tech!  This is an awesome website with immense apologetic value for people with a science background. I am a progressive creationist, and of course that is the view taken at Reasons to Believe. What Dr Ross has done is create a testable falsifiable creation model, making it true science and nullifying the main objection of skeptics. There are many good articles on science topics but Dr Kenneth Samples is a fulltime philosopher/apologist on staff at RTB as well. There is a searchable database and a site map to help locate what you need. Some of the resources are directed to the general public, but most of the articles are certainly suitable for college level research. They also have an institute which offers science apologetics classes and is eligible for college credit even at the graduate level.

Ligonier Ministries. : R.C. Sproul

RC Sproul is a great thinker, preacher and Christian philosopher. Of course, Sproul is strong on the reformed tradition, so expect that going in. While I don’t pin myself to a strict reformed theological system, I appreciate his work. I have read his book “Defending the Faith” and it is excellent. The website has the class room video version available online. I also read “Not a Chance” and it is a favorite apologetic resource for debunking the atheist mythology that chance is creative force in nature. There are resources and classes you can watch online for free. There are 57 pages of articles listed from a variety of good scholars and theologians suitable for research. There is also an index of sermons and a lot of question and answer type material as well. There is probably more material of a theological nature than an apologetic one but he really is a formidable philosopher and apologist, so it is worth taking a look around.
